Rechargeable batteries are part of everyday life. They power our phones, laptops, power tools, e-bikes, lawn equipment, cordless vacuums, portable power stations, and countless other devices.

Most of the time, we don’t give them a second thought. But batteries don’t always fail without warning.

Changes in appearance, temperature, smell, performance, or charging behaviour can signal that something isn’t right. Recognizing these warning signs early can help you act before a damaged battery becomes a much bigger safety concern.

1. The Battery Is Swollen or Bulging

A battery that has changed shape deserves immediate attention.

Swelling can occur when gases build up inside a battery due to internal damage or unwanted chemical reactions. You might notice a battery pack beginning to bulge, a laptop or phone casing separating, or a previously flat battery becoming distorted.

Never puncture, crush, squeeze, or attempt to flatten a swollen battery.

Stop using or charging the battery, and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for safe handling and disposal.

2. It Gets Much Hotter Than Usual

Some warmth during charging or heavy use can be normal.

A battery becoming unusually or excessively hot is another story.
